Washington Dead Cats

Special Show in The Arts Centre

We welcome French Psycobilly band The Washington Dead Cats

?Spring 1984
Formation of the Washington dead cats by Mat Firehair and Franck Darlock, guitarist.
They both decided to create a band mixing their tastes for the 30s horror movies, the Hollywoodian cinema of the 50S and their musical influences: Rockabilly, Surf, Garage and Punk77.
Nico would join them soon. He was the drummer of the punk band named Kremlin Kontingent, and they would ask the bass guitarist Sofia "Elly" Bahamas to join them as he was studying at the Fine arts with Mat Firehair.
In June, after only 8 rehearsals, they recorded their first demo CD with 8 songs on which could already be heard Whos behind the window and Swamp vamp. During their first gig, a hysteric cut her veins with a razor blade and so Elly definitely left the band.
X-Lior took over from Elly. She was Franck Darlock and Nicos high school mate.
The WDC played for Paris Bar Rock in a small café  Chez Jimmy, at that time Paris Bar Rock was in charge of the RocknRoll gigs in the Capital( Milkshakes, Sting Rays, Vibes, Daltons).
The first gigs (including the Opera Night in December) most of the time ended in fights.
1985
During a few months, Bezac joined the band as a sax player and then he left it to form Kni-krick.
He was replaced by Masto who had not been playing since the end of the mythical combo punk Lucrate Milk.
Recording of the second demo CD with the Haunted House and Red Neck included. It was released in England on the label Chainsaw-records. The very same label as the Living Texas, Vibes, Margin of sanity.
It was also the year of their first gig in Fleury Merogis prison.
The WDC met Yves from the label VISA who had already released live tapes of Berruriers noir, Lucrate Milk.
VISA wanted to release a live tape of the band. During the recording in Nevers, a fight started between the members of the band and some Teddy Boys who had felt insulted by the punk touch given by the WDC to the rockabilly style.
The gig was stopped and the tape which was supposed to be released wrapped in chocolate for Easter was never carried out.
Right out of funds, the WDC organized a charity gig Come or die in their premises, a damp basement in the Rue du Roi de Sicile, in order to pay back their one-year rent.
They shared the premises with Mome Rath, the Bonapartes, Burial Party, Jad Wio, it was the period of the New Wave/ Gothic music.
After their first tour in Holland during which most of their amps were stolen at a squat in Amsterdam, Nico decided to give up the band. Furthermore his girlfriend did not like the savage atmosphere surrounding the band.
Facing the impossibility to release the live recording on VISA and because of the growing fame of the band, Yves introduced the WDC to Philip Baia and Kid Bravo Loco from the Bondage label.
It was then that Franck Darlock and Mat Firehair announced them that they had no longer a drummer. After an audition during which one of the drummers to-be died of a heart attack, they engaged Mat Carasco.
His first gig with the band took place in a former cinema in Belleville, le Berry Zèbre. Since that day, the WDC joined the Bondage label.
From the start they defined themselves as an activist band and so the ideology of the label suited them perfectly.
They would go deeper into their social and political life implications.
Organized by Marsu, the representative of Bondage, they would give charity gigs with bands like Beruriers Noirs, Nuclear Device, Ludwig Von 88.
They had the same desire to release discs and to organize gigs accessible to anyone; it was an act in counterbalance to the system of the majors.
1986
Go vegetables go !, was released. The first colored jacket on Bonder records was featuring a picture of Masto. The following single Ghost cant talk was soon taken out of the stands because of some problems with the snapshot rights.
1986 saw the massive explosion of the independent radios and the fanzines. The alternative scene got organized. Due to of the Devaquets law the students demonstrated in the streets and the WDC played in the occupied universities.
The band toured in France, Switzerland and Belgium.
During that tour, leeks, lettuce and flour were thrown at the audience. It was the great time of The flying vegetables.
Invited by Beatrice dale to the show, Mon Zénith à moi, on Canal + for a direct, during the set they covered in flour and vegetables the whole stage which set on a fire alarm.
Yet, they were not at their first troubles. Whereas they were playing in a squat in Geneva that one was surrounded by the police.
The gig was organized by Philip who would make an apparition as a crazy skater in the video Waikki bay in 2004.
At the end of the year, Masto left the band to dedicate himself entirely to the photography the following year then he joined the band Berurier Noir.
So he was replaced by Daoenstein which first gig was at the Bondage Festival at the Transmusicales in Rennes.
Before getting on the stage, their pockets were rummaged through as the organizers had forbidden them to throw vegetables at the audience.
The public took revenge at the end of the gig as the whole place was devastated.
Shooting of the video Voodoo Island
3000 Euros damages were the result of a gig in Bourges.
At each gig, the audience took part in the game bringing with them more and more vegetables and flour to throw them at the band.
Because of its nefarious reputation, the gigs in Nice and Besançon were cancelled. Yet, they were given the opportunity to be invited for a show on channel 5.
Once again, the stage was devastated and in order to hide the mess the other guests were filmed in close up.
1987
Gigs in London with the Living Texas, Skitzo, Margin of Sanity. It was the heart of the psycho/garage wave.
Then, they were planned for a gig by Mark Spencer from the Cannibals, Shakin seven and Mary Chain were in the audience. He would spend the whole time looking away; yet, at the end of the show he came to congratulate them. An article was published in the English newspaper NME.
Mat Firehair would spend some days in a hospital of London because of his eccentric behavior during the show.
First tour with their mates from the label Nuclear Device and then followed a tour to support the SCALP (section carrément anti Lepen).
The WDC would give many gigs to support all the actions led against the national front or in favor of anti-racist strikes.
In October, the gig organized at the Elysée Montmartre was quickly sold out. The first part was starring the Membranes and the Satellites Stiv Bators (from the former Dead boys). The singer of the Lords of the New Church tried to make his way through the backstage to congratulate the band.
But Daoensteins mother forbade him to enter as she found him weird.
They made the cover of the Nouvel Observateur   in Paris, another article published in Liberation and then the Rock press which did not have paid attention to them until that day woke up all of a sudden to allow them many articles.
Rock tour in Fance with the Satellites in first part as they had also signed on the Bondage label. The WDC ruined another tv show on M6.
1988
Release of GoreaBilly Boogie followed by the single Pizza attack. Facing an incredible and massive flight of vegetables during their gigs, they decided to put an end to that habit as it had started to disturb them.
The vegetables would be replaced by confettis, fireworks, toilet paper rolls..used not always with the agreement of the organizers.
Two gigs at the Bataclan both time sold out.

Franck Darlock left the band. Dan replaced him, he was the former guitarist of Living Texas, and then Rico Kerridge became part of the band. He left the band too.
After a show at Le Zénith and a gig at the Bastille during which the WDC were surrounded by the CRS.
Dan disappeared to go to London.where he would become a famous tango dancer.
Mat Firehair released the best of Rockn Horreur with European bands fans of RocknRoll and horror movies. (Batmobile, the Crabs).

As the WDC were known to be antifascists some racist skinheads threw a bottle made out of glass at the head of the singer. He would come back on the stage for the encore his head still bleeding then he would be taken to the nearest hospital for some stitches.
Same story in Geneva, after the burst out of a firework in his hand, Mat Firehair spent the whole night at a hospital and so decided to play no more with fireworks.
