Why we decided to do a Takeaway Sunday Lunch (it could be a true story)
Got up early Saturday morning to rush to the supermarket to avoid the crowds. Drive 15 minutes to the supermarket to find everyone else has had the same idea as me. Try to find a parking space close to the entrance, but they’re all full, eye up the empty disabled and family spaces. No!! I can’t do it, so end ,up parking 150mts away.
Get a trolley, has it been sanitised? Not sure, fortunately there’s a sanitising station at the entrance.
Go to entrance, Realise I’ve left my mask in the car, run back to car, get mask, go back to the entrance, some bastard's nicked my trolley and £1, get another trolley sanitise it and finally get in to the store. It’s bloody chaos at the fruit and veg section, people ignoring the one way system, some not wearing masks, reaching over me whilst I’m looking at the Cabbages, I end up having an argument with a young woman (pushing a trolley which looks remarkably like my first effort) who says she doesn’t believe in masks and whilst I’m explaining to her that she really should consider wearing one, her partner turns up,. I’m subjected to a tirade of verbal abuse, I grab my Carrots, Green Beans, a Swede and some Spuds and get out of there quick. I then go to the meat section which offers a sorry selection of Joints, all the small ones and the ones on offer have all gone, so I end up with a family sized joint, bloody £22!! although it has been aged for 96 months and comes from a Hebridean Island. I then go to get Flour for the Yorkshire Pud’s, the shelves are empty, bloody panic buyers!!! I then have a lightbulb moment and go to the freezer section to get Aunt Bessies, they’re all gone too, damn!!! Defeated, I go towards the checkout following the one way system which leads me right to the end of the store, I pick up a load of unhealthy stuff I don’t really need on the way (mostly cakes and biscuits) and finally join a very large queue for the checkouts, no social distancing here, half not wearing masks. I finally get to the checkout and pay, God! £55.38!! I run out of the store, by now, there’s a huge queue to get in so I’m glad I came early. Sh*t!! I forgot the Dripping and Bisto. No way I’m going back in there. I call in to a convenience store on the way home and manage to get Bisto and Lard and even Aunt Bessies. Result!! God! £8.90!!.
Finally get home stressed and exhausted, it’s nearly 11.30 and I left at 8.
Spend the rest of the day moping about and wondering why there are so may selfish, stupid people in the world.
Sunday; Have a lie in but still get up at 9.30 to start prepping veg etc, I hate peeling Spuds! Pop the meat in at 11.30 for a 1.30 lunch, continually in and out of the kitchen all morning, find something interesting on the telly and sit down for a bit. At 1.15 realise I’ve not put the veg on, rush into the kitchen, turn down oven, put the veg on, seems to take an age, god! Why won’t the Swede go soft enough to mash? Turn oven up again and pop in Aunt Bessies. Wrestle with Swede, get rest of veg into serving dishes. Sh*t!! The Gravy!! Boil a kettle,(having poured all the veg water down the sink). Finally sit down at 2.15 to Rubbery overcooked meat, Soggy overcooked Roaties, crunchy Swede, Burnt and soggy Aunt Bessies (is that actually possible?) and Tasteless Gravy. The Carrots and Cabbage were OK though. Then spend an hour washing up and putting the kitchen back together.
The Alternative
Spend Saturday morning watching a bit of telly, have a nice breakfast, go for a walk, Phone The Anchor and order Sunday Lunch.
Sunday; Have a nice lie in and a light breakfast in bed (dippy eggs with soldiers). Do a couple of jobs, (that toilet seats been a bit loose for ages and find some oil for that squeaky door). Sweep the patio and settle down in front of the TV to watch the match with a beer or two (rude not to). At 1.30 the doorbell rings and there it is on the doorstep, a piping hot Anchor Sunday Lunch. Grab some plates, knives and forks, get another beer from the fridge and sit down and enjoy a lovely Sunday Lunch all freshly cooked, wow that Ian really knows how to make gravy. And then finish off with Sticky Toffee Pudding and Custard all for £15 pp. Put the plates in the sink and collapse onto the Sofa , I’ll do the washing up later, ooh what's that film on Netflix?
Monday; Spend 5 minutes washing up
